Why Does Texas Electricity Cost Keep Increasing?

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

I don’t know about you but I am watching everything increasing in price. Gasoline, food, insurance, property taxes, movie tickets, you name it the price is increasing. In fact I am afraid we are going to continue to watch prices increase. Unfortunately the price of Texas Electricity is doing the exact same thing.

So why are our prices increasing? The majority of electricity generated in Texas comes from natural gas and coal. The price of natural gas has increase over one hundred percent in a year and coal has increase by over eighty percent. This does not help our Texas electric rates.

There are two good things that will help us through this tumultuous time. First, and most immediate, is that the consumers of electricity have the right to choose their provider. Unlike the past we were stuck with one company and had no choice. So look for the lowest rate you can get and sign up with that provider. The second is that our state is located in a perfect geographical situation. We can take advantage of both wind and solar power.

According to the Texas Public Utility Commission, “Texas has the highest level of renewable energy potential in the nation, largely due to its climate and sheer size. The state’s wind power potential alone is almost two times as much as its total annual peak electric demand.” So Texas is well positioned for the future and I believe that as technology improves we are going to see less reliance on natural gas and coal in Texas and more wind and solar power.

So we can all get through this together. The prices may be high today but the future looks good for Texas! Renewable energy is in our future and I know we will all see the change to renewable energy in Texas.
