For others who have several different utility service providers to choose from then they of course want to find the company that has the lowest rates in their area. Everyone wants to save money when they can. When you are choosing the company to be your electric utility service provider it is good to call around and find out the rates per kwh that the companies are charging their customers. Do not base your decision on which company to use based on just their prices though. Look at the whole picture and see what services you will be getting from which companies.
You will have two different choices in the rates you pay for your electricity. A power company will either charge a fixed rate or they will charge a variable rate for the power. If the provider is offering a fixed rate per kwh then you will pay the same amount of money for each kwh used. The rate is locked in and does not fluctuate up and down. Many people choose to go with a fixed rate for the simple reason that they can have some idea how much their electric bill is going to be because they know how much they are paying per kwh.
A variable electric rate allows the consumer to time the market and choose when they wish to lock in their rates. People who choose the variable rates try to lock in the amount they will pay when they think the market is at its lowest point.
This can be risky because the weather is unpredictable and can cause snow-storms or other weather related incidents that cause the natural gas consumption to increase. When the natural gas consumption goes higher then the price for electricity goes up. When this happens consumers can be forced into locking their rates in at a much higher price for fear of exactly how expensive the price is going to go up to.
With the increased snow that occurred in 2011 the price of natural gas rose and thus the price of electricity is at an almost all time high. Having the power to choose does put the consumer back in control. The utility companies are forced to try and keep their prices to a minimum in order to keep customers.
When you are looking at firms to choose your electric provider look at the contracts they offer. Some of them will require you to sign a one year contract for their service. Other providers will want you to sign a contract that may keep you with them for two years.
Make sure that during the period of your contract the rates are locked in and the company cannot raise your rates without voiding the contract. When you select cheap electricity companies make sure you are going to receive service repair in case of emergencies.
